’Tis the Season to Tune In (and Drop Out)
Tonight's new moon in Sagittarius is a gloriously goofy reset.
Hi, doll.
This week’s astrology is either very good or very annoying depending on how invested you are in checking everything off your holiday to-do list. Personally, I‘m a fan, but I’m also the lemonade queen (with many hat tips to Beyoncé).
Tonight’s new moon—the last of 2023—joins the Sun and Mars in Sagittarius. That’s a highly rambunctious energy.
Saggie is the sign of the pilgrim, the philosopher, the holy fool. She may not know the meaning of life but she knows life has meaning and she’s determined to find it, no matter how silly or sacrilegious her quest may seem. Ruled by magnanimous Jupiter, this sign is forever pushing boundaries in the name of fun and faith, never malice or manipulation.
What Saggie doesn’t do is business as usual.
A lunar cycle inflected with this energy is best embraced as a joyful reset. With Mercury retrograde beginning tomorrow—it ends January 1—we may as well call this calendar year now. Mama’s done for all intents and purposes.
This may come as welcome news. Geopolitically, environmentally, professionally, and romantically, 2023 has been a charmless blur for many. Actually you could make that case for everything since November 2016, but why fall down that rabbit hole?
My point—and I do have one —is that it’s understandable to feel fried just about now. Also that the stars are practically demanding that we unplug from the pressure we normally put on ourselves around the holidays.
Doggedly anti-materialist Sagittarius is more about play than purchases, and its bull-in-the-china-shop nature is incapable of toeing the line. Mercury is retrograding first in saturnine Capricorn, then Sag, so our ability to keep up with the Joneses—do anything on time, pay off bills, suffer fools—is pretty much off the table.
With this astrology, not even the Joneses can keep up with the Joneses.
Rituals, Not Rules
The key terms are hand-made and low-fi.
Mercury Retrogrades occur so frequently that we’d never get anywhere if we froze in the headlights every time one drove into town. Though inconvenient, they enforce useful detoxes from the buzzy busy-ness we pretend is real life.
Obviously the normal advisories apply. Back up your devices, buy travel insurance, avoid overbooking, review everything twice before pressing send.
Mostly, though, I recommend enjoying this reprieve from regular space and time. Let that liminal week between December 25 and January 1 stretch out to three.
Beneath all the bells and whistles, the spirituality of this season is quite beautiful— all miracles at the last hour and light in the darkness. Embrace the magic by reading poetry or scripture by candlelight. Pray under a tree, decorated or not. Turn off the wi-fi and listen to the night.
Schedule nothing but sing-alongs, candle ceremonies, crafting marathons. Bake cookies from old-fashioned cookbooks, string popcorn, festoon yourself and your hearth with baubles already in your possession.
Gift services, not stuff. Write love notes, not checks. Gab all night and sleep through your alarm. (With this retrograde, it probably won’t go off anyway.)
High-octane, goofy-ass Sagittarius requires exertion and fresh air so make sure to get outside without getting too earnest about it. Play tag, go on long rambles, run like Phoebe. If the weather is dreary, stage a pillow fight or build a blanket fort. A dance marathon always does the trick.
No matter how bleak you may be feeling—and there are legitimate reasons to despair—optimistic, expansive Sagittarius is here to lift the mood. All new moons offer rich downloads, but tonight’s dreams are bound to be boundless. So start those vision boards now. Papa Jupiter loves to grant wishes.
The dystopia may have arrived, but utopian vibes are in the air.
The Ruby Report is conjured with as much happiness as hard work, and I’ve been honored to witness amazing growth in my Ruby Intuition practice this year.
As a token of my appreciation, I’m offering discounted annual subscriptions and holiday reading packages until January 1.
Intuitive reading packages, consisting of one discounted intuitive reading and one follow-up guidance session, are available. Anyone who has received an intuitive reading in the last 12 months is also eligible for a guidance session package, consisting of three discounted guidance sessions.
Both packages can be gifted to loved ones. I also am pleased to offer individual gift readings. Feel free to reach out with any questions about these offerings.
Annual paid subscriptions can be purchased at a 20 percent discount. Paid subscribers receive Spotify playlists, glimpses behind the veil, cultural reviews, and new features I’ll unroll in the new year. (I’m considering a self-read audio file of every post, so let me know if that would be of interest.) This week, paid subscribers received an essay about the creative ethic modeled in the brilliant documentary American Symphony, and the story of how this ethic helped heal my broken heart.
Also, paid subscribers keep this newsletter afloat. (I have four planets in Sagittarius so bluntness comes with the territory.)
Of course, whether you gift yourself or a loved one with Ruby Intuition, I’m honored by your faith in this work. I always say it and it’s always true: Your presence is a present.
With waggling eyebrows and slow kitty blinks,
