Hi, doll.
Today is the vernal equinox, the official first day of spring. It is the year’s most powerful burst of energy, a bright new bloom, a magnificently roaring fire.
In the pagan and astrological calendars, this is Ostara, the first day of the new year—when Mother Earth officially bounds back to life. No matter what else is happening, this transition offers the possibility of a future with more miracles than mess.
Traditionally, we embrace this hallowed event with revelry and pageantry—flowers, feasts, costumes, wine, orgiastic writhing (ahem!). But we also may embrace this reboot as a softening—of the soil, the air, our hearts.
We all need the wonder of something new and sustaining. We all need a systemic and seismic healing. We all need practical magic.
So here’s to color and fragrance and winds and seeds. To pedals and petals and sunshine and mudluscious rain. To springing forward and to fresh starts and always, always to love abloom.
Rites of Spring
Here in New York, today is bright if unseasonably cold. But no matter the weather where this finds you, take a moment to go outside, place your hands on the heart chakra, and inhale the fresh air.
If it’s warm enough, take off your shoes and wiggle your toes in the Earth.
Take time to check in with your body. Attune all senses to your environment. Listen with your ears, nose, eyes, skin. Travel deeply into this node in space and time.
Do you hear cars honking? Wind rustling? Birds chirping? How does the sun feel on your face? How warm are you?
Aa you settle more fully into this moment, notice what desires come through. What foods are you craving? What flowers do you want to see blooming? What are you looking for more of in your days? What do you wish to plant?
What we put in, we get back. What we give allows us to receive. This is not transactional energy. It is reciprocal energy—an economy of love. A utopian evolution that may be our only viable path forward as a collective.
Turn to the heavens, and imagine the world you’d like to inhabit. How will you support freedom, ease, equality, and joy? How will you serve your highest self and the highest good? How will you celebrate it?
Breathe in this beautiful change, then gently request tools to build it out.
Recipes of Spring
To receive these tools, we should purify and stimulate our bodies and minds. Our blood, our lymph nodes, our brains.
